The Wicklow Sailing Club will
celebrate sixty years in existence next year, as the
Round Ireland Yacht Race celebrates its 30th
anniversary! The prestigious event will leave from
Wicklow Town on 20th June 2010.
The internationall renowned Race has attracted some of
the world's best sailors and boats over the 15 races to
date. The event is classed in the same category as the
Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, China Sea and Malta Middle Sea
offshore races.
New to the Race is the GPS tracking, which allows a
worldwide audience tune in for the five or six days to
follow the fleet. In 2008 almost 90,000 people visited
the website to follow the boats, that's a hit rate of
one every 5 seconds!
The race depends on the goodwill and co-operation of
many agencies and local bodies, and the Wicklow Sailing
Club has expressed its gratitude to Wicklow Town
Council, Wicklow County Council, Wicklow County Tourism,
Wicklow Chamber of Commerce, Wicklow Civil Defence,
Wicklow Gardai, Wicklow RLNI, Wicklow Port Company the
Irish Sailing Association and more!
The Club would like to particularly thank the Chamber
for the use of Wicklow Gaol for the launch.
